Oz Comic-Con Melbourne returns this June long weekend.

So once upon a time I used to think that Oz Comic-Con was just for those friends and co-workers who would sit up all night watching Star Trek and line up for the midnight showing of Star Wars.

Then I had a son. A gorgeous little boy who is obsessed with superheroes and comics and turning everything not nailed down into a lightsaber. And suddenly all the photos from last year’s Oz Comic-Con that I saw made this an event we were not missing in 2016.

There’s knockout headlining stars – including John Barrowman (Torchwood, Doctor Who, Arrow), Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess) and Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgement Day), alongside a guest list of fandom favourites such as David Anders (iZombie, The Vampire Diaries), Timothy Omundson (Psych, Supernatural), Ingrid Oliver and Samuel Anderson (Doctor Who), Paul McGillion and Rachel Luttrell (Stargate: Atlantis) and David Giuntoli (Grimm), there’s something for fans of every genre. Each guest will be taking part in professional photograph and autograph opportunities across the weekend, as well as exclusive question and answer panels each day.

Oz Comic-Con isn’t just about the celebrity guests, however. The show floor will be packed with exciting and exclusive activities and features, including cosplay central, the family activity zone, and a bustling artist’s alley. With world renowned comic artists – including Nicola Scott, Mike Choi, Wolfgang Bylsma and Tom Taylor – in attendance, fans will be able to meet the hands behind their favourite works, as well as get their favourite comics signed. The Victorian finals of the Australian Championships of Cosplay will also be held at Oz Comic-Con Melbourne, with the winner securing a place in the national finals in Brisbane this September.

Oz Comic-Con Melbourne will be held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre on June 11-12, with doors open from 9am until 6pm each day.

Boneo Maze is a 27-acre nature based attraction, nestled in the belly of Mornington Peninsula’s southern coastal townships. By day, the park is a hive of activity, offering peddle boats, maze treasure hunts, picnic gardens and mini golf. But after 6pm, the park’s magical side comes to life with the Mornington Peninsula’s inaugural Lantern and light sculpture event: LANTASIA.

For a limited season this summer, LANTASIA will open nightly from Boxing Day until Jan 27th, 2016. Direct from the Dandenong Festival of Lights, Boneo Maze invites visitors to experience an ethereal display of fantasy light sculptures experienced as a journey into the night gardens.

Images by Boneo Maze & Your Coastal Connection

Born from an ancient tradition of lantern making, the beautiful sculptures are crafted over several months on hand-painted silk over wire frames. LANTASIA will feature more than 100 light creations and a long-held dream of owner Michael Wittingslow; “Many years ago I saw the lantern festivals in Singapore and thought how I’d love to bring them here to Australia”. “By opening the gardens of Boneo Maze at night and creating this unique light sculpture ambience, we’re hoping to bring a little bit of magic to the Mornington Peninsula”.

Carefully placed along the 1.5 km of boardwalk, the colourful light sculpture scenes invite visitors to ‘watch the garden glow’. Casting long re ections are the larger 3m high sculptures that shimmer over the lakes and waterways. Charming, softly-lit creations of pink amingos, ibis, lotus owers, giant lilies, grasshoppers and butter ies brings LANTASIA to life. Offering a chance to view the light sculptures up close is the Dragon photo seat and falling tree light display: a feature in the Games garden. Add the music, lights and grandeur of the Wittingslow family’s vintage carousel (circa 1864) and the evening almost takes on a celestial atmosphere. Before departing, guests can play a round of night mini golf or enjoy a coffee, ice cream and dessert at the lakeside cafe.

Event Details:

Experience the magic of Lantasia: a light sculpture event in the night gardens. Journey through the Boneo Maze at night and discover over 100 beautiful hand-made silk lantern creations. View the sculptures up close and record your memories on the dragon photo seat. Step back in time with an 1864 vintage carousel, play night mini golf. Enjoy supper at the lakeside cafe, sit back, relax and watch the gardens gloLANTASIA logow.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS is coming to Australia for a strictly limited season and tickets are now on sale for the Melbourne shows starting December 18.

Following its triumphant season in London’s West End, the acclaimed revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking musical CATS comes to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre from 30 October, 2015.

This 2015 Olivier Award-nominated hit revival, was reworked for the recent West End season, by the original creative team, received rave reviews and extended its season due to overwhelming demand. Our very own Delta Goodrem will play the coveted role of Grizabella and will sing Memory, one of the most well-known songs of all time in the Sydney, Hobart and Melbourne seasons. This hit revival introduces a rapping ‘street cat’ in the famous Rum Tum Tugger role, who will perform some serious breakdancing moves.

CATS promo 3

Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger-than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.

The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year – the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

CATS, one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The ground-breaking production was the winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. In 1983 the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony awards including Best Musical, and ran for 18 years.

Since its world premiere, CATS has been presented in over 30 countries, has been translated into 15 languages and has been seen by more than 73 million people worldwide. Both the original London and Broadway cast recordings won Grammy Awards for Best Cast Album.

CATS is quite simply a phenomenon. Featuring a fantastical oversized set, a superb score, inspired choreography and mischievous costumes, CATS is a brilliant song and dance spectacular not to be missed.

Set in modern day New York City, Ghost The Musical is a timeless fantasy about the power of love. Walking back to their apartment one night after a romantic dinner, Sam and Molly are mugged, leaving Sam dead on a dark street. Sam is trapped as a ghost between this world and the next and unable to leave Molly, whom he learns is in grave danger. With the help of Oda Mae, a phony storefront psychic, Sam tries to communicate with Molly in the hope of saving and protecting her.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Film in 1990, Ghost became a blockbuster hit and an instant classic, winning numerous awards worldwide. The film starred Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Tony Goldwyn and Whoopi Goldberg and was directed by Jerry Zucker. Bruce Joel Rubin’s script won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and Whoopi Goldberg won the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of psychic Oda Mae Brown.

The musical features book and lyrics by Academy Award winner Bruce Joel Rubin and original music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winners, Dave Stewart (half of the multi-Grammy Award-winning Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror and Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill). The score also includes the iconic song “Unchained Melody”, written by Hy Zaret and Alex North and famously performed in the film by The Righteous Brothers.

Employing special effects never before seen in an on-stage musical, Ghost The Musical features an incredible array of illusions – Sam, as a ghost, walks through a solid door, inanimate objects take on a life of their own while spirits ascend to the heavens and subway passengers are thrown in the air and people disappear and reappear right before your eyes. Ghost The Musical premiered in Manchester in 2011 before transferring to the West End and later Broadway. It has been enjoyed by over a million people worldwide and nominated for numerous awards including five Olivier Awards and three Tony Awards.
